Isn’t it always the way that the foods that we are drawn to are the ones that are really bad for us.
Wouldn’t it be great if we could be addicted to broccoli or green beans? Unfortunately though, that is not how the body/mind works. Perhaps an understanding of these powerful cravings and their effect on our bodies and minds will help us all to resist the temptation.
A study from the University of California recently found that the more highly processed foods are the more they are likely to be addictive. The study showed that these highly processed food are consumed and absorbed by the body in the same way as ‘drugs in abuse’. We are all familiar with the term ‘sugar high,’ and we all how good it feels whilst you are eating a high-fat, high-sugar food. Unfortunately these highs are short-lived and are usually followed by a crash and a craving for more of the same kind of foods.
The top ten addictive foods are; (there are no surprises here…) pizza, biscuits, chocolate, crisps, icecream, chips, cheeseburgers and fizzy drinks (non diet).
If you can keep these foods to a minimum you will free yourself from the powerful cycle of cravings, highs and lows. It is surprising how quickly you can free yourself from sugar cravings. Leave sugary foods out of your shopping for a week and you will already see a reduction in your desire for them.
If you would like any further advice on your diet we can help you by coming up with a personalised nutrition plan to suit you and help you to beat the cravings.
